You know what's awkward? Re-reading a book you first read right when it came out, and thinking, "Geez, this book is dated." I am so old. Also, the ablist language ("retarded," "lame") drove me nuts. Because I know that Meg Cabot isn't an ablist individual (I mean, the main character's brother has schizophrenia and is portrayed fairly well, I think). She just wrote this book before most people knew any better. I didn't give it a second thought when I read this at age fourteen or whatever. It really bugged me this time though.
