I loved so very many things about this book, including the Maori mythology and the asexual character, neither of which I've seen in YA or fantasy before. I'm particularly taken with the idea that our personal mythologies can shape our perception of the world quite literally. I also loved the ending, which managed to be not perfectly happy but still extremely hopeful. The only negative I have is that the mysterious happenings at the beginning stayed mysterious far too long--I think I was more frustrated as a reader than Ellie was as a main character at how little we were learning about what was going on. But once the book got over the knowledge hurdle, I couldn't stop reading. Bravo to Ms. Healey.
